Local listings are the dozens of different websites the list local businesses. They range from the very well known such as Google Business and Yelp to the some what obscure like Tupalo and Judy's Book. There are also hundreds of smaller citation sites that get their information from one of the big 4 online data houses (Infogroup, Acxiom, Factual, and Neustar/Localeze).
The reason is that if you have inaccurate information about your business, people using these other sites may not be able to call you or stop by because they're looking at wrong information. In addition to that, Google may actually penalize your website's SEO if your Name, Address, and Phone number are not the same across the web.
There are several ways that you can go about fixing these issues.
We use the example that if you had a hole in your wall, the other guys will come in and hang a picture over it for you. If you ever stop paying, they come back and take their picture. With our Listing Distribution and Listing Sync product we actually come in and fix the hole in your wall.
